Server Upgrade

This month must be OS month with Leopard next week and today Ubuntu 7.10 was released. The upgrade went successfully with no apparent hiccups. I of course did a full backup of the system just in case. The whole process took about 2 hours which I was pretty happy with since I’m sure their servers are being hammered right now. I was originally going to wait, but I decided to go ahead and give it a go.There have already been some great reviews for the desktop version. I highly recommend it to anyone looking into an alternative to Windows. The great thing is that you can try it by booting up off the install cd which is also a Live disc. That means you can try out the desktop and everything off the disc without having to install on a hard drive. This new version also by default comes with compiz fusion which gives you some nifty graphical effects like that of OS X. My favorite part though of Ubuntu has to be it’s package manager. This lets you add and remove programs from one place. No need to go and hunt down the program you want. It also automatically installs all dependent programs automatically for you. That was always one of my biggest gripes about Linux. I would find a program I wanted to try, but then found out I had to hunt around the internet for several other packages and try to get them working as well. That is no longer a problem with Ubuntu.Anyway I think I have rambled on enough. Now just a week until Leopard. 🙂
